Ted Speaks with the Keaukaha Community Association

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

February 20, 2008, marked the first official speaking opportunity for Ted and his supporters.  Ted spoke to about a dozen people at the Keaukaha Community Association meeting held at the Keaukaha Elementary School.

The theme of Ted's discussion was "Vision Requires Awareness."  Ted pointed out it is a person's awareness of the circumstances, the surroundings and the needs of the community, that shape a true and clear vision of how to move ahead to benefit the community.  Too many people talk about vision, but few have the awareness of what needs to be done, Ted said.  Ted mentioned how politicians have only now expressed an interest in and promise to build a new cafeteria at the elementary school, but the overcrowding was a problem that people in the community were aware of for a long time.  Addressing a problem shouldn't have to wait until an election to get attention and be resolved, Ted concluded.

Ted answered several questions about the community.  One question was about his position on the OHA ceded lands settlement before the Legislature.  Ted said that he would approve it because the parties, OHA and the State have agreed to the settlement.  Ted cautioned that if beneficiaries have concerns and objections to the proposed settlement, they have to get involved and make their voices heard.  OHA is a governmental agency and has to be responsive to its beneficiaries like any other agency and if the proposed settlement is opposed by OHA's beneficiaries, then OHA should not be recommending the settlement.

Ted responded to another important question about relocation of the Hilo Airport.  Ted's response was that no idea is too dangerous to discuss.  And since the Keaukaha Community is concerned about airport noise, then let's start talking about solutions and alternatives.  Ted said he didn't know what the right answer is, but pledged that as a Legislator, he would pursue a serious discussion of alternatives.

Before leaving, Ted thanked and acknowledged the uniqueness and spirit of the Keaukaha Community and that the Community's commitment, vision and work was truly impressive.
